## Authorizing Microsoft Exchange

To authorise, simply follow the steps as described below and make sure you meet the requirements to be able to sync. When you click 'next', a pop-up window appears asking you to log in and allow access.

The Exchange connector can be used to connect to:  

1.  Exchange Online
2.  Exchange on-premise as long as the hybrid deployment requirements are met. We can't connect to a fully on-premise Exchange (isolated from everything)

<InfoBox>**For Microsoft Exchange, we need authorization per FOLDER. This means you need to set up a new connection for each FOLDER you want to keep in sync.** You can choose from all your existing FOLDERS in the authorization step after entering your login details.

Make sure the correct permissions are enabled in your Microsoft Exchange account:

1.  _offline\_access_
2.  _openID  
    _
3.  _User.Read  
    _
4.  _Contacts.ReadWrite  
    _

If you already authorized Microsoft Exchange account(s) in the past or in any other PieSync integration, you'll be able to skip the first part of the authorization and choose from your **CONNECTED ACCOUNTS**.

## Default Field Mapping

Depending on the other app you're syncing with, you'll see a number of standard Microsoft Exchange fields being mapped by default. For instance, in a connection with Google Contacts, the default field mapping looks like this:

<InfoBox>PieSync syncs the default name field(s) that come with the apps. Sometimes they have a different structure in both apps you connect. E.g. first and last names are separate in app A and joint in a single field in app B. In the background, PieSync joins first and last names together from app A to B and separates them again from app B to A. Our algorithm is smart about which part it updates in app B.</InfoBox>

## Customizable Field Mapping

For now, we **don't support** Microsoft Exchange customizable contact fields. Therefore, you can only custom map any additional standard fields that aren't included in the default mapping yet. Bear in mind a mapping between two fields can only exist if the types of fields are compatible, and the particular compatibility will determine the direction of the mapping as well. ## Additional Options

### Syncing Deletions

Currently, there are no Microsoft Exchange integrations on the PieSync platform that support our [deletions sync](/help/features/syncing-deletions/).  

### Syncing Unsubscribes

Currently, there are no Microsoft Exchange integrations on the PieSync platform that support our [unsubscribes sync](/help/features/syncing-unsubscribes/).

<InfoBox>The availability to Sync Unsubscribes/Deletions is app and connection dependent. If the box (screenshots above) is not there to tick, it's simply not possible. We need to be able to detect unsubscribes/deletions on one side and at the same time be able to create add the tag 'PieSync Unsubscribes' or ‘PieSync Trash’ on the other side. How to set up specific apps, what rules are available and mapping overviews

### PieSync and Global Address List & Public Folders

PieSync provides a solution to 2-way sync contacts you would find in Microsoft Outlook, specifically inside personal contacts folders. A personal Outlook Contacts Folder is meant...

*   for personal use
*   that easily syncs with your [smartphone](/help/faq/get-your-phone-contacts-in-sync/)
*   sync-compatible for PieSync (read how to for [Outlook](/help/connector-apps/outlook-office365/) / [Exchange](/help/connector-apps/msexchange/))

However, this personal contacts folder doesn’t include the contacts of the **Global Address** List (GAL), data maintained by your IT administrator. This is where you would essentially find the contacts data of all your colleagues. A personal contacts folder is not the same as what Outlook classifies as a **public folder** either. Still, these assets contain contacts you may want to sync towards a CRM, or towards an e-mail marketing app.

It’s why we’ve partnered up with [CiraSync](https://www.cirasync.com/gal-sync/). They've developed a solution to sync GAL & Public folder contacts internally inside Outlook environments. They can move the data to a personal contacts folder from where PieSync picks them up. So you will need both CiraSync & PieSync. How does this work?

#### Sync contacts from the GAL to other cloud apps

If you want to synchronize GAL contacts towards other cloud apps like Mailchimp, Hubspot, follow these steps

1.  Go to [cirasync.com](https://www.cirasync.com/gal-sync/) and sign up for **CiraSync Personal Edition**, and set up a GAL sync ([video](https://www.cirasync.com/gal-sync/)) to a personal or shared mailbox
2.  Your GAL contacts should now be moved over into an Outlook personal contacts folder
3.  Set up PieSync, authorize the mailbox with access to this folder and connect it to connect to the [many available apps](https://www.piesync.com/outlook/) (read how to for [Outlook](/help/connector-apps/outlook-office365/) / [Exchange](/help/connector-apps/msexchange/))
4.  There is no step 4, you're all done.

#### Sync contacts from Public Folders to other cloud apps

Similarly, if you need to synchronize public folder contacts towards other cloud apps;

1.  Go to [cirasync.com](https://www.cirasync.com/public-folder-sync/) and sign up for **CiraSync Personal Edition**, and set up a public folder sync ([video](https://www.cirasync.com/public-folder-sync/)) to a personal or shared mailbox
2.  Your public folder contacts should now be copied over in a personal mailbox
3.  Set up PieSync, authorize the mailbox with access to this folder and connect it to connect to the [many available apps](https://www.piesync.com/outlook/) (read how to for [Outlook](/help/connector-apps/outlook-office365/) / [Exchange](/help/connector-apps/msexchange/))
4.  There is no step 4, you're all done.

#### Syncing contacts towards Outlook Personal Contacts folders

The above scenario's move Outlook contacts towards other cloud apps. What about the other way round? Getting all CRM contacts synced towards a thousand Outlook mailboxes at once? While it's possible to set this up in PieSync if you only need to sync towards a handful of inboxes, IT system engineers or Outlook administrators will find it more interesting to investigate [CiraSync Enterprise Edition](https://www.cirasync.com/ufaqs/enterprise-vs-personal-edition-enterprise-edition/) in combination with PieSync to accomplish this task.

We sync with Outlook 365, which is the cloud-based version of Outlook. Please check if your local Outlook is in sync with [Outlook 365](http://outlook.live.com). If your local Outlook contacts are [available here](http://outlook.live.com), you can start using PieSync!

**Due to different or lacking API’s we don’t sync with following Microsoft accounts:**

*   Non-Migrated Outlook.com accounts (Hotmail/Live/Msn or no REST API).

## Default Field Mapping

Outlook's contact records are very data rich and offer ample fields to store contact information. Depending on the other app you're syncing with, a default mapping is proposed. This could look like this, if you want to make a sync with Hubspot. If you're expecting Outlook fields to appear here and they are not, it is likely the other app does not support this field by default.
